Understanding how communication is influenced by the two foundational layers in the Family Communication Framework impacts teenagers and is important for them as they become more independent. 

• The most important layer is the family and implementing communication tools and strategies for teenagers and their parents is critical for them to navigate social technologies in a safe meaningful way.
• Teenagers are motived by the feeling of belonging and acceptance by their peers. Social technologies are tools that, used in the right way, can build positive relationships, help them express themselves, share their accomplishments, and stay connected.

Investing the time to learn communication skills around social technologies is critical as these technologies are used in everyday life more and more. Our teens need to learn critical thinking, discernment, and about their own hidden bias to become better leaders.

Technology Informed 

Gaining more knowledge about the 4 Pillars of Defense in the Family Communication Framework, will help families have a better understanding of the tools and strategies they can implement and how it will improve communication.

• There are a variety of options and strategies  available for families to implement. Parents that engage with their teenagers about the options will have better conversations in choosing the options that work best for their family.
• Learning how these options can take some of the burden off the parents and help the teenager become more responsible in managing their usage.
